Crush Update 2013

Post Image

October 6, 2013 Greetings from Walla Walla Wine Country! The very hot summer accelerated growth in our vineyard and many wineries have already picked their grapes. Below is a photo that I took in mid-September at Pepper Bridge Vineyard. Wow! This is the earliest that I can remember in my nine summers in this valley. What worked so splendidly for the grapes wasn’t so good for my tomatoes. Normally, we would have been swimming in gorgeous, ripe heirloom tomatoes by […]

Hot Days of Summer in Wine Country

Post Image

Summer is great in Walla Walla’s wine country! Days are hot, nights cool down 25-30 degrees. As the wheat changes to gold, the wine grapes are quietly building sugar and just starting to change color. Grape harvest typically doesn’t start until late September or early October throughout the valley. However Crush starts right after Labor Day as our wineries start beginning in fruit from the other AVAs.

Crush is almost here

These hot days in August signal the last few weeks of relative freedom for winemakers now that the first signs of veraison were been spotted on August 3 at Windrow Vineyard, home of Tero Estates. In theory, harvest could begin as early as mid-September. However, typically, Walla Walla is usually late to harvest, anywhere from late September into the middle of October. As the winemakers wait, they inspect equipment, take delivery of new oak barrels and they are making more frequent […]

Wine Country Walla Walla

Post Image

Walla Walla is truly a special place. This part of the country was given the sun, 300 days or so,  and the land, rich and fertile; both attributes that make living here wonderful. In addition, we have inherited an infrastructure of a vibrant downtown core and wonderful, tree-lined streets and parks that grace neighborhoods of stately Victorians and later-period Craftsmen homes throughout downtown and Whitman College. After Kyle Mussman completed the renovation of the historic Marcus Whitman Hotel in 1999, […]
